I personally have been so many times that they should just give me one of those cool blue and yellow polo shirts so I can direct people around who are lost or confused. </center><center> </center><center>I consider myself an IKEA pro builder. The problem here was that we had so much new furniture to build that it would have taken forever to do it ourselves, and building solo is not much fun either.<br /><br />We invited Laura's family over for a furniture building party.<br /><br />Even though I have personally built at least 100 IKEA pieces (no joke), I still like to at least glance at the instructions once in a while.<br /><a title="DSC04826 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4807897274/"><img alt="DSC04826" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4073/4807897274_a3d95160d2.jpg" width="375" height="500" /></a><br /><br />The first thing built was the new vanity that goes in our bedroom. This will be a great place for Laura to get ready in the mornings. This item is actually from Target.<br /><a title="DSC04824 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4807272197/"><img alt="DSC04824" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4136/4807272197_c3c80d18b0.jpg" width="375" height="500" /></a><br /><br />Here it is all done and ready to go:<br /><a title="DSC04837 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4807902770/"><img alt="DSC04837" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4121/4807902770_7b8745cec9.jpg" width="375" height="500" /></a><br /><br />Let me introduce you to our secret weapon, Laura's sister, Diane. She just graduated from Caltech so she is basically a genius. It is good to have people like this around when building IKEA furniture. She is heading off to Yale for grad school this week so we only had her for a limited amount of time. She is sitting in an ocean of parts that will become our new dresser.<br /><a title="DSC04835 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4807902216/"><img alt="DSC04835" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4118/4807902216_f317606a9b.jpg" width="375" height="500" /></a><br /><br />Her and her dad busted this thing out.<br /><a title="DSC04839 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4807903996/"><img alt="DSC04839" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4139/4807903996_7911d648d6.jpg" width="375" height="500" /></a><br /><br />Nice work guys!<br /><a title="DSC04843 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4807906714/"><img alt="DSC04843" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4100/4807906714_8f652cab9e.jpg" width="375" height="500" /></a><br /><br />"Wait for me! We finally got our new couch from "The Sofa Company." They were able to customize the size and give us the couch we wanted in the length we needed. They took about half a foot off the length. We also had them make the perfect sized automan to put our feet on.<br /><br />Here it is when it first was dropped off.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4807237651/" title="DSC04787 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC04787" height="375" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4074/4807237651_41e9a61565.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /><br />We love this couch! Doesn't it look all comfy and cozy?<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4807868792/" title="DSC04820 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC04820" height="375" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4101/4807868792_f440c964ce.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />We are actually in a contest on Facebook where you can vote for our couch. The winners get $1,000.00! Please help us to win this money. I am still officially laid off with the school district so we may need it really bad...<br /><br />Here is the link: <a href="http://apps.facebook.com/promotionshq/contests/45885/voteable_entries/6406731">http://apps.facebook.com/promotionshq/contests/45885/voteable_entries/6406731</a></center>

This has saved us valuable counter space and has provided much needed storage. It can be rolled out of the way if we need to use the door that goes from the kitchen to the front porch.<br /><a title="DSC04873 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4861612482/"><img alt="DSC04873" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4075/4861612482_20c0161c05.jpg" width="375" height="500" /></a><br /><br />Next to the fridge, we added shelves to place our more decorative kitchen items. We are still playing with the arrangement, but you can see how nicely they display things.<br /><a title="DSC04874 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4860992045/"><img alt="DSC04874" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4079/4860992045_f7422d7666.jpg" width="375" height="500" /></a><br /><br />Did you notice the dog door at the bottom of the wall. We added this for our future dog. Here it is close up (before I painted the black edges white).<br /><a title="DSC04866 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4861001057/"><img alt="DSC04866" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4118/4861001057_6672cb42d5.jpg" width="375" height="500" /></a><br /><br />Next up is our brand new fridge. We love it! It has an ice maker and water in the door, unlike our old fridge.<br /><a title="DSC04875 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4861612942/"><img alt="DSC04875" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4076/4861612942_f44890df19.jpg" width="375" height="500" /></a><br /><br />Above the fridge is a great upper storage cabinet. It is deep and can store all kinds of stuff. This is one of four upper cabinets that we added to the kitchen.<br /><a title="DSC04876 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4860988957/"><img alt="DSC04876" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4076/4860988957_64d50784dd.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a><br /><br /><br />All of the new upper cabinets had to be trimmed out with moldings and side panels. Ikea provides all of these parts when you buy the cabinets. It is a bit of a jigsaw puzzle to figure out and cut right, but they look great when they are all finished. We used glass doors for the other three cabinets. We installed lights inside and underneath that shine on the countertops. They add a touch of class to our formerly rustic kitchen.<br /><a title="DSC04877 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4861613486/"><img alt="DSC04877" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4093/4861613486_9f95635799.jpg" width="375" height="500" /></a><br /><br />Here is the faucet, which you have seen if you follow this blog, but now you can see it completely finised with the new air gap cover on the right. That is the white thing you see there. This faucet is one of my favorite features because of the "touch" technology. (Try not to look at that pile of debris in the carport)<br /><a title="DSC04888 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4861612288/"><img alt="DSC04888" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4116/4861612288_cd0708564a.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a><br /><br />Above the window is this great faux roman shade. The color matches the blue on the lower cabinets. Laura's mom made this from a different curtain that we bought at Target. She is very gifted with a sewing machine. She completely deconstructed the old curtain and made a totally different design. She also made couch pillows out of the scraps (you'll have to wait to see those). Thanks Mom 2!<br /><a title="DSC04878 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4861609852/"><img alt="DSC04878" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4096/4861609852_477d724a0a.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a><br /><br />Laura added these accent pictures on the sides of the cabinets for a bit of decor.<br /><a title="DSC04882 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4860990103/"><img alt="DSC04882" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4119/4860990103_208bd536ec.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a><br /><br />Oh, I almost forgot to show you our step stool storage compartement...<br /><a title="DSC04880 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4861610438/"><img alt="DSC04880" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4122/4861610438_370d9c58f0.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a></center><center>...actually, this is the future home of our new dishwasher. It doesn't come for another month. We'll show you that later...<br /><br />On the end-wall, we added two storage racks that are great for hanging pots or keeping our cookbooks. They also add a touch of that Tyler Florence kitchen look. You'll know who that is if you watch Food Network. His kitchen helped inspire our kitchen's colors and look.<br /><a title="DSC04883 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4861613730/"><img alt="DSC04883" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4140/4861613730_231ff4067d.jpg" width="375" height="500" /></a><br /><br />Here is the new convection oven/range again. We would love to hear what you think. Leave us a comment.<br /><br />I see you eyeing that entertainment center in the living room. The hand sprayer hand completely come off and all there was was the left over tube that retracts into the faucet neck. If you werent careful it would spray all over you when you turned it one. All of us had been soaked at least once.<br /><a title="DSC04671 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4807224691/"><img alt="DSC04671" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4093/4807224691_33908251f9.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a><br /><br />First I had to remove this crusty old thing. Die faucet die! I rendered it useless in the process as you can see.<br /><a title="DSC04672 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4807225617/"><img alt="DSC04672" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4101/4807225617_8609ef6d9e.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a><br /><br />Since I (Doug) am all about the kitchen, I wanted this cool new faucet from Delta. It has "Touch" technology. You may have see the commercial for it. It comes with a lot of parts. Notice the wires and batteries. This thing is pretty high tech.<br /><a title="DSC04673 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4807849776/"><img alt="DSC04673" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4121/4807849776_69583fd590.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a><br /><br />It works! Notice the cool blue light at the base of the neck. It glows when the the water valve is open. All you have to do to turn it off is touch it.<br /><a title="DSC04674 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4807227163/"><img alt="DSC04674" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4139/4807227163_98eb791324.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a><br />All I need to do now is add the soap dispenser on the left side. I will show you that and how the faucet works in the "after" video (coming soon).<br /><br /></center>Mr. Lainghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11714116637917013480noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2739917006976958204.post-26644946975635044442010-07-27T07:00:00.000-07:002010-07-27T07:00:02.510-07:00Pizza Pizza<center>So we decided to try our new convection oven out... To test it, we baked our favorite frozen pizza. This is the "Culinary Circle" rising crust pizza from Albertson's.<br /><a title="DSC04692 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4807229613/"><img alt="DSC04692" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4118/4807229613_204697971e.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a><br /><br />First you must preheat the oven. Here I am trying to figure out how to use the touch control panel. I just accidentally set it to bake the pizza for 23 hours. Oops...<br /><a title="DSC04695 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4807232053/"><img alt="DSC04695" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4121/4807232053_38e148c901.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a><br /><br />You have to make sure that all of the peperoni are not hanging over the edge. I am excited to be using my special pizza pan. It has holes in it to give the crust a little crispiness. It did not fit in our old oven so this is a great moment for us.<br /><a title="DSC04693 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4807230457/"><img alt="DSC04693" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4120/4807230457_194f3722ce.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a><br /><br />It's going into the oven! I see you eying those cabinets... Don't worry, we'll be posting on the kitchen later this week.<br /><a title="DSC04694 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4807854806/"><img alt="DSC04694" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4134/4807854806_d87e408d40.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a><br /><br />Yummy! You can even see the convection fan in the back. That is really all there is too it. It's an oven with a fan in it. The hot air blows all around ensuring a nice even bake. No more burnt crust with undercooked peperoni.<br /><a title="DSC04697 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4807233805/"><img alt="DSC04697" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4122/4807233805_7570c9041c.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a><br /><br />Ooh Bubbly...<br /><a title="DSC04698 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4807858006/"><img alt="DSC04698" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4135/4807858006_459b36d032.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a><br /><br />"Honey...dinner!" The hallway (and I use the term "hallway" loosely) originally had some shelves which were set into a little nook next the the bathroom door (refer to "before" video).<br /><br />We took out those shelves and bought a tall, narrow wardrobe cabinet from Ikea. The only problem was that the cabinet was about four inches too deep for the space. I decided I could cut it so we bought it anyway.<br /><br />After cutting four inches off the back of every piece I assembled the cabinet like normal with a few small modifications.<br /><a title="DSC04601 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4807833704/"><img alt="DSC04601" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4123/4807833704_4f4a6a4767.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a><br /><br />Here it is all ready to go into the nook. You can see the holes I cut for the electrical outlet and the gas line that sticks out.<br /><a title="DSC04603 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4807252681/"><img alt="DSC04603" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4141/4807252681_0509d96c68.jpg" width="375" height="500" /></a><br /><br />Ikea sells shelves for this unit but they are a bit pricey. All you have to do is go to Home depot and get a piece of melamine shelving. They sell all different sizes. From this piece I was able to cut 5 shelves.<br /><a title="DSC04645 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4807884696/"><img alt="DSC04645" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4141/4807884696_029e1e4c3c.jpg" width="375" height="500" /></a><br /><br />Add a few shleving posts (from any hardware store) and the shelves pop right in. Sorry Ikea, you don't get my money for this one... but we'll be back...again...<br /><a title="DSC04647 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4807261863/"><img alt="DSC04647" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4135/4807261863_41d1b766da.jpg" width="375" height="500" /></a><br /><br />We liked this cabinet because it left some space on the side for things like brooms, dust mops, the ironing board, etc.<br /><a title="DSC04651 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4807886956/"><img alt="DSC04651" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4098/4807886956_b14ddebc07.jpg" width="375" height="500" /></a><br /><br />Here is the cutout with the electrical outlet showing through. This way we can get ready for work in the mornings. Here are all of the finishing details that have been patiently waiting to go into our wonderful little bathroom.<br /><br />You may be wondering what is going on in this picture... Well, before you attach your toilet paper hanger permanently, it is a good idea to test it out at that level. Nothing gross here but we actually taped it to the wall and took turns doing the reach test to get the location right. If your toilet paper is too hard to get to, that can be a problem for obvious reasons. Moving on...<br /><a title="DSC04635 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4807877306/"><img alt="DSC04635" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4080/4807877306_9a1c6d9c56.jpg" width="375" height="500" /></a><br /><br />Here I am installing a curved shower curtain rod. This will give a little more elbow room than a normal rod. Always make sure your shower curtain rod is level!<br /><a title="DSC04653 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4807216209/"><img alt="DSC04653" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4099/4807216209_d22a6f84a0.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a><br /><br />Next to the toilet paper hanger is the double towel rack. There is very little space between the back wall and the shower so the double rod is crucial to make sure that we can hang all of our towels.<br /><a title="DSC04659 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4807219337/"><img alt="DSC04659" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4122/4807219337_48a6eed9da.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a><br /><br />These are the new door hooks. Picture some bath robes hanging out here.<br /><a title="DSC04656 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4807841116/"><img alt="DSC04656" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4118/4807841116_2499b64e41.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a><br /><br />The hand towel hanger...<br /><a title="DSC04657 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4807841936/"><img alt="DSC04657" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4119/4807841936_26bcc4ca84.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a><br /><br />New shower head...<br /><a title="DSC04666 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4807845802/"><img alt="DSC04666" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4142/4807845802_51a46a3b23.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a><br /><br />Here are some glass shelves that we added above the toilet. This will help with our storage issues. And they work nicely with the glass tiles...<br /><a title="DSC04658 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4807889560/"><img alt="DSC04658" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4115/4807889560_a5d21aec49.jpg" width="375" height="500" /></a><br /><br />This mirror/medicine cabinet was actually a wall mounted cabinet, but I modified it with my jig saw and made it slide into the wall. This way it does not stick out so far off the wall. Now there is a nice deep storage area behind the mirror.<br /><a title="DSC04848 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4810928247/"><img alt="DSC04848" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4078/4810928247_bb89ca0159.jpg" width="375" height="500" /></a><br /><br />This faucet is nice because the neck swivels. This will be great when we are trying to clean the sink or share the counter while getting ready and brushing our teeth and all of that fun stuff.<br /><a title="DSC04850 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4811547982/"><img alt="DSC04850" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4139/4811547982_3d1871a544.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a><br /><br />We took out the old pedistal sink and added this nice cabinet and sink top. Now we have plenty of storage under the sink. So we bascally went from two shelves before to a sink cabinet, three wall shelves, and a deep medicine cabinet. This will hopefully really help meet our storage needs. Anything alse can be stock piled in the new hallway cabinet (To be posted on later).<br /><em><br />*Disclaimer: This picture is a bit out of focus. I took it, not Laura. So if you are thinking of hiring her to take pictures have no fear. </em><br /><a title="DSC04851 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4811548858/"><img alt="DSC04851" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4134/4811548858_145db86384.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a><br /><br />Here is how it looks with the shower curtain and the towels all working together with the colors of the tiles. We hope you like it.<br /><a title="DSC04849 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4810927445/"><img alt="DSC04849" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4077/4810927445_a74df2d683.jpg" width="375" height="500" /></a><br />Stay tuned this week. We are moving in over the next couple days and I am going to be posting some of the projects and things that have been happening these last few weeks since we have kicked it into overdrive.<br /></center><center></center>Mr. Lainghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11714116637917013480noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2739917006976958204.post-67341280359236464132010-07-09T08:00:00.000-07:002013-05-09T22:08:49.415-07:00Details: Moldings, Blinds, and Curtains<center>
We are very close to actually moving into this house that we have owned for over three months now. Before we do, there is some detail work to do. One major step in the finishing of the interior is molding. We put all new trim moldings around all of the doors, windows, and floors. We even installed crown molding in the living room.</center>
<br />
<center>
To save time and effort, we painted the molding before installing it. This way we only needed to touch it up after it was installed and caulked. Here I am cutting a piece of crown moulding. It is crucial to have a compound miter saw when doing this. Installing crown molding is a geometric nightmare. Every cut requirs 10 minutes of pure concentration. It is very easy make the cut in the wrong direction. Don't I look serious about this?<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4732644451/" title="DSC04535 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC04535" height="375" src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1210/4732644451_6c75dd82ab.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /></center>
<center>
To make the work easier, I purchased a pnuematic brad nailer. I already had a small air compressor so it was all I needed. A little glue and a couple of brads and the molding will stay right where you want it.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4732641051/" title="DSC04531 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC04531" height="375" src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1101/4732641051_13443d0b90.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /></center>
<center>
The trick with crown molding is getting the corners right. Without perfectly square walls you can easily get a connection like this. One option is to use a scrap piece and keep trying different angles until it is right and then do the cut on the actual piece. I did not have any extra pieces so I went with the "fill it in" option.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4732646019/" title="DSC04537 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC04537" height="375" src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1329/4732646019_09b9e7783f.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /></center>
<center>
All it took was a little "Fix-all" patch comound and some sanding...<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4776477278/" title="DSC04581 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC04581" height="375" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4136/4776477278_42a803dde7.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /></center>
<center>
Add some caulk on all of the edges and seams and little touch up paint...<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4776493596/" title="DSC04591 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC04591" height="375" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4118/4776493596_671340df08.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /></center>
<center>
and now you have a beautiful corner. Nobody will know your walls are not pefect (who's are?).<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4775929027/" title="DSC04593 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC04593" height="375" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4142/4775929027_518b7c52ca.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /></center>
<center>
We also installed all of the window treatments (minus the sliding door). For the two sets of French doors in the front we used shear curtains which will add privacy but still allow a good amount of light to come in.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4775847741/" title="DSC04585 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC04585" height="375" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4076/4775847741_80a7ee5bdd.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /></center>
<center>
For the bathroom and bedrooms we used composite 2 inch blinds. They install very easy. Just attach these brackets in the corners of the window frames...<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4775851301/" title="DSC04588 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC04588" height="375" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4118/4775851301_965294aa00.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /><br /><center>
...lift the blinds into place, and now you have a nice finshed look.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4776491028/" title="DSC04589 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC04589" height="375" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4119/4776491028_8d40126cb0.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /><br />Here are the bathroom blinds (nice to have some privacy).<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4776497444/" title="DSC04586 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC04586" height="500" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4077/4776497444_b652bdc166.jpg" width="375" /></a><br /></center>
<center>
Here are the blinds looking good in our second bedroom. Notice the moldings around the windows and the floors. Just wait until you see it with the floors all exposed and polished.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4775849379/" title="DSC04587 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="DSC04587" height="375" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4077/4775849379_1c5e55c717.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />What are those blue things you ask? You'll just have to wait for our "Kitchen Finishing Touches" post (coming soon...we hope...).</center>

Well, it broke. He offered to replace it and then suggested we make the opening bigger. He even offered to make it 18 inces wide like a bar top. We took him seriously and opened the whole wall up.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4729623622/" title="DSC04067 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1088/4729623622_318b054ed6.jpg" alt="DSC04067" height="375" width="500" /></a><br /><br />We even went to his workshop in Gardena and chose a granite color for the bar counter top from his scrap pieces of granite. We decided to go with a darker color that would play off the dark tones in the other granite and work with some of the colors in the living room. Here are the two granite samples next to each other. The existing color is on the left and the bar counter is on the right. The brown tones will match our couch and flooring nicely.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4732638175/" title="DSC04527 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1120/4732638175_e549453be0.jpg" alt="DSC04527" height="375" width="500" /></a><br /><br />Here is the crazy part of the story:<br /><br />We could not get a hold of the granite guy when we tried to have our new counter delivered. All of his numbers were not working. He literally fell off the face of the earth. My mother-in-law (Mom 2 as I call her) decided we should drive down to his shop (since we actually knew where it was) and see what was going on. When we got there, we spoke to a man who was working. Good thing mom 2 speaks Spanish. We asked what happened to the main guy. He didn't seem to really know.<br /><br />I looked at the counter he was working on and realized it was ours (shocker!). I asked for a tape measure and noticed that it was 8 feet long instead of 88 inches like we requested (I originally told the granite guy to write down the measurements but he did not... He said he would remember them..). This nice man at the shop said he would cut it shorter and that it would be ready by 1:00pm. Somehow he believed that this counter top belonged to us. I guess we look very trustworthy.<br /><br />So we went to target (2 different locations), had lunch at Red Robin (My fav), and went back to the shop at 1:00pm.<br /><br />They were just finishing polishing it up when we got there. Rather than wait for them to bring the counter and install it, we decided to grab it and go (everything had been paid for anyway).<br /><br />Here it is in the back of the car.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4728985435/" title="DSC04510 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1237/4728985435_a0b2384e50.jpg" alt="DSC04510" height="375" width="500" /></a><br /><br />I had to get the area ready where the counter would go. Here are the brackets that we chose.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4729630108/" title="DSC04509 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1038/4729630108_88cdd8cae5.jpg" alt="DSC04509" height="375" width="500" /></a><br /><br />Plywood goes under the granite. We stained the bottom brown since it is slightly visible while sitting on the couch in the living room. This way it will not be noticed easily.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4729627842/" title="DSC04508 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1367/4729627842_34a6bf1595.jpg" alt="DSC04508" height="375" width="500" /></a><br /><br />The plywood gets attached to the top of the wall.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4728998373/" title="DSC04514 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1037/4728998373_bcfaea7fde.jpg" alt="DSC04514" height="500" width="375" /></a><br /><br />It took all four of us to hoist this thing on the wall. This picture is staged since Laura had to step away to take it. It must weigh about 200 pounds. Underneath I put some construction adhesive even though it probably would not be coming off that wall ever. The top slips right over the plywood. The edge hides the plywood nicely (the edge of the counter is twice as thick as the main part).<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4728987949/" title="DSC04515 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1424/4728987949_01fabcab22_b.jpg" alt="DSC04515" height="375" width="500" /></a><br /><br />Doesn't it look great?<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4728995269/" title="DSC04524 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1104/4728995269_0487a62bd2.jpg" alt="DSC04524" height="375" width="500" /></a><br /><br />Here is the side view.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4729640024/" title="DSC04523 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1036/4729640024_c77ee42644.jpg" alt="DSC04523" height="375" width="500" /></a><br /><br />And now from the kitchen. We love it! This is where we will be eating since there is no room for a dining room table in this cute little house.<br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4728992919/" title="DSC04521 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1100/4728992919_cb31294b9c.jpg" alt="DSC04521" height="375" width="500" /></a></div></center><br /><div style="text-align: center;">So that is our crazy story about the counter top that just happened to be made the day we decided to randomly show up at the shop that did not know we were coming. And, they actually gave it to us. How did that happen? I thought we were going to be eating off of a plywood counter for a while. We are just so glad it is here!<br /><br />We hope you will come and dine with us in the near future and help us enjoy this miraculous addition to our home.<br /></div>Mr. Lainghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11714116637917013480noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2739917006976958204.post-58025163924375696842010-06-18T08:00:00.000-07:002010-06-18T08:00:02.753-07:00Bathroom Tile<center>For our bathroom we decided to go with glass mosaic tiles. We both really like how they look. We did not expect it to be so hard to find the colors we wanted. We were looking to go with something that had some greens and some blues. You would think that one trip to the tile store would be all we needed to locate the right pattern... </center><center><br /></center><center>We went to a few different places. Everyone had patterns with blues and patterns with greens but none that combined the two colors. We were about to settle with a blue pattern from Home Depot when I said, "Let's try Lowes just in case..."</center><center><br /></center><center>Wouldn't you know it? They had the perfect tile right there. Here it is in the picture below. We had to special order it but it was worth the wait and it only took 7 days to get it in.<br /><a title=" by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4711184840/"><img alt=" " src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4059/4711184840_ffe6689a4d.jpg" width="500" height="375" /></a><br /><a title="House324 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4683042506/"></a><br />I started this 2-week project by removing the sink and the toilet. Then I had to remove the old drywall from the walls where we would be placing the tile.<br /><a title="House323 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4682412219/"><img alt="House323" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4066/4682412219_f0b8a61845_b.jpg" width="600" height="800" /></a><br /><br /></center><center>I kind of made a big mess...<br /><a title="House377 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4683055146/"><img alt="House377" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4021/4683055146_7d3f0a5ce4_b.jpg" width="600" height="450" /></a><br /><br /></center><center>We removed the harwood flooring to put tile there as well. I really got it to cut the big floor tiles.<br /><a title="House358 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4683051728/"><img alt="House358" src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1306/4683051728_be69f02d00_b.jpg" width="600" height="450" /></a><br /><br /></center><center>It was getting late so I decided to move on to the tiles that I needed the saw for. The wall will have to wait to be finished on another day.<br /><a title="House354 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4682421053/"><img alt="House354" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4066/4682421053_ca62b21b61_b.jpg" width="600" height="450" /></a><br /><br /></center><center>First, I cut the tile that would frame the bottom of the window. Here are some nice mitered cuts.<br /><a title="House353 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4683050676/"><img alt="House353" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4039/4683050676_82c02033f7_b.jpg" width="600" height="450" /></a><br /><br />Now on to the floor. I placed my first tile halfway between the door opening. I will build my starter row off of this.<br /><a title="House349 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4683050048/"><img alt="House349" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4065/4683050048_afd8e64b3c_b.jpg" width="450" height="600" /></a><br /><br /></center><center>Here it is in all of its glory, the starter row. This gives a nice clean line of tile that the eye will follow to the glass mosaics. Notice how the edge of the tub is curvey?<br /><a title="House347 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4683049672/"><img alt="House347" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4007/4683049672_0a9f85eb3f_b.jpg" width="450" height="600" /></a><br /><br /></center><center>Here is how I cut the curved edges. First I cut as many straight lines as possible. I drew that cut line using a homemade wall scribe made out of a piece of drywall, a China marker, and some tape (not pictured).<br /><a title="House346 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4683049436/"><img alt="House346" src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1298/4683049436_27ea274282_b.jpg" width="600" height="450" /></a><br /><br />On the curved portion I made several parallel cuts down to the cut line.<br /><a title="House341 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4682419129/"><img alt="House341" src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1274/4682419129_62e6c44cb5_b.jpg" width="600" height="450" /></a><br /><br /></center><center>Then I broke them off. They break close to the cut line.<br /><a title="House340 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4683048644/"><img alt="House340" src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1308/4683048644_1bf000ebbf_b.jpg" width="600" height="450" /></a><br /><br /></center><center>Then I cleaned up the line with the saw blade and my tile nippers (not shown).<br /><a title="House339 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4683048400/"><img alt="House339" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4066/4683048400_51cee8d0f5_b.jpg" width="600" height="450" /></a><br /><br />And here they all are laid in nicely. Notice the curvey line just below Laura's tosies. (I think I broke 4 perfectly good tiles in the prcess of getting those curved cuts just right)<br /><a title="House333 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4683046864/"><img alt="House333" src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1273/4683046864_a8900c4f32_b.jpg" width="600" height="450" /></a><br /><br /></center><center>Next, it was time to grout. The glass mosaics took a lot of grout with all of those grout lines to fill.<br /><a title="House402 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4707644209/"><img alt="House404" src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1275/4708288006_bb68c8645c_b.jpg" width="600" height="450" /></a><br /><br /></center><center>After wiping with a sponge you are left with a white haze. That just buffs off with a clean rag. Just be sure to wipe off the excess grout better than I did or your will spend days trying to get the tiles clean...<br /><a title="House405 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4708288292/"><img alt="House405" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4011/4708288292_e8c929daa8_b.jpg" width="600" height="450" /></a><br /><br />For the floor I actually used my fingers to push the grout into the grooves.<br /><a title="House407 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4708288814/"><img alt="House407" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4011/4708288814_239c5a017f_b.jpg" width="600" height="450" /></a><br /><br /></center><center>We went with a beige color for the floor grout.<br /><a title="House408 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4707645695/"><img alt="House408" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4023/4707645695_514219ab9d_b.jpg" width="600" height="450" /></a><br /><br />After getting the grooves filled in, you just use the sponge and wipe off the excess.<br /><a title="House410 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4708289440/"><img alt="House410" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4050/4708289440_fb1bacb9b6_b.jpg" width="600" height="450" /></a><br /><br /></center><center>I did one row at a time and basically pushed myself out the door as I went.<br /><a title="House411 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4708289632/"><img alt="House411" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4058/4708289632_1e9771c1f5_b.jpg" width="600" height="450" /></a><br /><br /></center><center>It looks good with the wall tile doesn't it?<br /><a title="House412 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4707646809/"><img alt="House412" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4011/4707646809_294417904c_b.jpg" width="600" height="800" /></a><br /><br /></center><center>Check out that nice curvey edge again...<br /><a title="House413 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4707647001/"><img alt="House413" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4013/4707647001_42f7c6f994_b.jpg" width="600" height="450" /></a><br /><br />Here you can see how all of the tile works together. When we got our own house, I knew I would want to do some custom tile. We decided to do a tile backsplash in the kitchen. We also are doing tile in the bathroom which we will post on next week. </div><br /><div align="center"></div><center>The inspiration for our kitchen and the color sceme came from my favorite cooking show, "Tyler's Ultimate." This is with celebrity chef Tyler Florence. Here is a picture:</center><div align="center"><br /></div><p align="center"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Tl3ULuLcZkE/TBHFDgn0sfI/AAAAAAAAAcU/_tI6EiMgtno/s1600/Tyler-Florence-1-lg.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 300px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5481378885573849586" border="0" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Tl3ULuLcZkE/TBHFDgn0sfI/AAAAAAAAAcU/_tI6EiMgtno/s400/Tyler-Florence-1-lg.jpg" /></a> (This man and Bobby Flay are my heros)</p><br /><center>Notice how he has green subway (3X6) tile on the back wall. I love this look. I asked Laura if I could tile the walls with the same green tile. She was not feeling the whole wall thing so we comprimised and only went half way up the walls. This tile was no easy find. We had to custom order it to get the special green apple color.<br /><a title="House220 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4664903852/"></a><br /><br />First I had to put blue board up where I took out the old drywall. Blue board is basically waterproof drywall.<br /><a title="House221 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4664279307/"><img alt="House221" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4008/4664279307_29e7f9c3fc_b.jpg" width="600" height="450" /></a><br /><br />On top of that I attached Hardy Backer Board, which is designed for tile installation.<br /><a title="House228 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4664280013/"><img alt="House228" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4046/4664280013_86a1949206_b.jpg" width="600" height="450" /></a><br /></center><br /><center>Here is the bad boy tile saw that I had to rent in order to get nice clean cuts in my tile. You just attach it to your drill and mix away. It saves a lot of time and effort and gives you a real good mix.<br /><a title="House234 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4664280657/"><img alt="House234" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4034/4664280657_2051378919_b.jpg" width="600" height="450" /></a><br /></center><br /><center>This corner is the focal point of the Kitchen when you look in from the living room and front entrance. Many of us have painted so there is not much to say regarding the techniques we used to paint our house. We still want to show what colors we are going with and hope that you will respond with your feedback. </center>
<br />
<center>
</center>
<center>
Please keep in mind that we still have yet to get the trim molding installed and painted. It will all be white, so you can picture that as you go through these photos. Enjoy.</center>

Before getting to the colors we had to prep, which included the "fun" process of sanding these beams. There are 12 in the whole house so it wasn't that bad.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4616018619/" title="House144 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House144" height="500" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4060/4616018619_d7b71549fc.jpg" width="375" /></a><br /><br />And then we had to prime everything. The fresh drywall was easy and only took one coat of primer. The kitchen walls being burgundy (with yellow and green stripes) took about three coats before we were ready to paint them..<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4616019321/" title="House146 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House146" height="375" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4069/4616019321_1e582614cc.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4616019843/" title="House147 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"></a>Choosing the living room color was the hardest pick for us. We knew we wanted something young, lively, and modern looking. We decided to try a nice bright green color. Looks kind of like...<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4616634966/" title="House148 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House148" height="375" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4069/4616634966_c3146c6338.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /><br />Pea Soup!<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4616635228/" title="House149 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House149" height="375" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3359/4616635228_7b1db6c436.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4616020757/" title="House150 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"></a>We painted a sample panel before really going for it. It looked a bit too lively...<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4616022715/" title="House156 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House156" height="375" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3316/4616022715_a52a636dee.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /><br />We went back to OSH to see if they could take it down a notch. The paint guy suggested going with a 50% mix. This would be the same color only a bit lighter. Yes, it is really called "Far Away."<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4616023085/" title="House157 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House157" height="375" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4026/4616023085_6c0d0e04ef.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /><br />Ooh, smooth and creamy...<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4616023651/" title="House159 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House159" height="375" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4047/4616023651_909a3f0c5c.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /></center>

Here is the new color in comparison with the old. Slightly toned down and just right (Thanks paint guy)<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4616023957/" title="House160 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House160" height="375" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4043/4616023957_281d6ddf0a.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /></center>

Laura is excited to finally be painting her new living room.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4616639262/" title="House161 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House161" height="500" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4029/4616639262_29850ce3be.jpg" width="375" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4616026767/" title="House165 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"></a>Here you can see the green in the living room with the white ceilings. You can also see the freshly painted kitchen in the background. The kitchen walls are white but we will be adding color with the tile backsplash very soon. (We will post on that next week)<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4616888162/" title="House169 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House169" height="375" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4039/4616888162_a9bcb56bd2.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4634002797/" title="House058 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"></a>Cutting in around these beams was not fun after doing it coat after coat after coat. I know it will be worth it in the end.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4634003105/" title="House061 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House061" height="375" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4041/4634003105_693ba0d657.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /></center>
<center>
It was a painting party. Laura's parents were again very dedicated in helping us get this house done. We owe them so immensely for all the time they have put in.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4664902372/" title="House200 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House200" height="375" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4042/4664902372_61e53727ae.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /><br />We went with a light blue for the master bedroom.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4664902500/" title="House202 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House202" height="375" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4046/4664902500_5dd5e6c23f.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /><br />For the second bedroom/office/project room we went with a light gray. Laura tells me that this light gray will go nicely with baby blue or pink some day. Hopefully some day soon right??? (JK)<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4664284173/" title="House266 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House266" height="500" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4004/4664284173_2a1d5dfa97.jpg" width="375" /></a><br /><br />It was Laura's project to paint the closet. She had fun and did a great job.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4664909526/" title="House271 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House271" height="500" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4008/4664909526_748612c145.jpg" width="375" /></a><br /></center>
<center>
For the beams we went with a dark brown solid wood stain. This dark color will tie in with the dark hardwood floors.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4664904304/" title="House224 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House224" height="375" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4004/4664904304_285245d658.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /></center>
<center>
This solid stain really helps clean up these old discolored beams.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4664904362/" title="House225 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House225" height="375" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4034/4664904362_02598b5b8d.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /></center>
<center>
Don't they look nice?<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4664284985/" title="House272 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House272" height="500" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4066/4664284985_4373deb014.jpg" width="375" /></a><br /><br />Don't worry, we are not keeping that light fixture.</center>

This was a big project and hard to get right. For this reason, we hired Seth Spangle, owner of 180 Design and Build. He is the dad of one of my (Doug's) students. He is the one on the left in the picture below. On the right is oddly our realtor Dan Abboud (another dad from my class). He dropped by to see how the house he helped us get was turning out.<br /><a title="DSC02070 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4602628165/"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3588/4602628165_5eecae0451_b.jpg" width="900" /></a> </center><center></center><center>It took about two days to get it all cut just right and on the walls and ceilings.<br /><a title="DSC02071 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4602628815/"><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1193/4602628815_9066b25e3b_b.jpg" width="900" /></a><br />One of the trickier parts to drywall was the ceilings in the kithcen and both bedrooms. We wanted to keep the beams exposed, so each piece had to be cut just right to fit in there perfectly. You can see the bays done on the right verses the ones on the left that have the insulation exposed.<br /><a title="DSC02072 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4603244884/"><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1358/4603244884_fa620d3cdd_b.jpg" width="900" /></a><br /><br /><a title="DSC04020 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4602616971/"></a>It was another two days to tape and mud it. Here is the tape going in.<br /><a title="House106 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4615996621/"><img alt="House106" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4050/4615996621_b981f8e9be_o.jpg" width="900" height="675" /></a><br /><br />More tape and the mud going up.<br /><a title="House115 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4615998887/"><img alt="House115" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4004/4615998887_feb0a4aac6_o.jpg" width="900" height="675" /></a><br /><br />It took a lot of mud. This is the first coat. When this dries, they sand it and then do the skin coat.<br /><a title="House126 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4616627388/"><img alt="House126" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4028/4616627388_c4c53fd426_o.jpg" width="900" height="675" /></a><br />This beige tone is the skin coat. We asked Seth for a smooth finish. We are not big fans of texture. Most new homes these days are built with a thick texture known as "orange peal." We decided we like smooth walls. This is very hard to do with drywall (another reason for hiring Seth). He had his crew apply this skin coat so that we would have a perfectly smooth finish (once it was sanded smooth of course).<br /><a title="House127 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4616627674/"><img alt="House127" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4055/4616627674_d76c4eefe2_o.jpg" width="900" height="675" /></a><br /><br />Here is the living room before the skin coat...<br /><a title="House131 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4616628926/"><img alt="House131" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3394/4616628926_b21e37f065_o.jpg" width="900" height="675" /></a><br /><br />...and here it is after. It was worth hiring a professional to get this part of the remodel done. We would like to thank Seth Spangle and his crew from 180 Design and Build for giving us beautiful smooth walls.<br /><a title="House143 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4616633068/"></a><br /><br /><br /><br /></center><center></center>Laurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04484202731202322328noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2739917006976958204.post-40505523975001008732010-05-14T09:00:00.000-07:002013-05-09T22:08:19.343-07:00Insulating the Ceiling<center>
Currently our house has no attic. The ceiling you are looking at in this picture is also the roof. That's right. If you moved one inch through that wood, you would be outside. This means when the sun is beating down on the roof, you feel the heat on the inside. We decided that we would insulate the ceiling to help keep it cool in the summer and warm in the winter. In many of the rooms, like the kitchen here, we wanted to keep the exposed-beam look. In order to maintain this look, we had to frame out each section, or bay, and insert insulation.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4577561644/"><img height="675" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4063/4577561644_0c17cf2f3d_o.jpg" width="900" /></a><br />Here I am with Laura's Dad working on framing out the ceiling bays. We are attaching 2X2's on the sides of all of the beams. On the ends we attached 2X4's. This is what the drywall will be screwed into eventually.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4577561750/"><img height="675" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4014/4577561750_dc02001e7f_o.jpg" width="900" /></a> </center>
<center>
<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4577561816/"></a>These are the spacers we used to make sure that the 2X2's were evenly spaced away from the ceiling. We attached them 1 inch from the ceiling. With the 1.5 inch foam insulation, this would leave a 1-inch air gap, which will help insualte as well.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4577561980/"><img height="675" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4050/4577561980_c879bb153f_o.jpg" width="900" /></a></center>
<center>
In the middle of some sections we added 2X4's so that light fixtures could be attached. The electrician installed receptacle boxes to these. In the other bays, we used 2X2's in the middle.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4577562212/"><img height="675" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4052/4577562212_caecae25b8_o.jpg" width="900" /></a></center>
<center>
Now you can see one of those boxes. This flat receptacle box is called a "pancake" box. It is the same thickness as the drywall that will be installed around it. The light fixture attaches directly to it. Laura's dad is installing the foam insualtion. (No, that is not the light fixture we are using)<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4602583481/"><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1342/4602583481_690f955696_b.jpg" width="900" /></a></center>
<center>
Here is Laura's Parent's dog, Sandy, looking cute. She came that day just for fun.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4603199356/"><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1321/4603199356_30d7b78595_b.jpg" width="900" /></a> </center>
<center>
</center>
<center>
This foam insulation is basically large sheets of styrofoam. If you cut it right, it squezes nicely between the beams. This is a good way to insulate a shallow space. It takes a lot of measuring and cutting but I think it was worth it. (If I had this stuff when I was a kid I could have built the coolest fort ever!)<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4602589553/"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4031/4602589553_e0eb1a8af7_b.jpg" width="900" /></a> </center>
<center>
</center>
<center>
More measuring...<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4603205390/"><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1123/4603205390_4a8be78e43_b.jpg" width="900" /></a></center>
<center>
"Yes, I am still being cute"<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4603206924/"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4068/4603206924_090815e4e7_b.jpg" width="900" /></a><br />Bedroom...done! (Notice the light receptacle, that's new too!)<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4603209536/"><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1112/4603209536_e41807b0ff_b.jpg" width="900" /></a></center>
<center>
Since we dropped in a ceiling in the living room, we used standard fiberglass insulation here. It has a great R-value but it is messy, ithcy stuff. I used this staple gun to hold it in place.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4602599063/"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3409/4602599063_297224c64b_b.jpg" width="900" /></a> </center>
<center>
</center>
<center>
This 9.5 inch this pink fluff has an R-Value of R-30. That is pretty high compared to the walls that have R-13. The styrofoam provides about R-10. Since we will spend much of our time in the living room, it was important to go as high as possible in here. We hope it really helps keep the hot roof from heating up our main living space.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4603254594/"><img height="900" src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1019/4603254594_0d03581b5e_b.jpg" /></a><br />Living room...done! (Notice the new recessed lights are on. Now we can move on to Drywall. Next week we will post on this process. This will be one of the only projects we are having professionals come in to do (other than electrical). My drywalling skills are Ok but not as good as I'd like to have our walls look. We can't wait to have walls again!<br /><br /><br /></center>

First thing he <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_2" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">said</span> was, "All of this has to go." Here is one of the reasons why. This wire connection is a huge fire <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_3" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">hazard</span>. Plus, the house was not grounded.<br /><a title="house40 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4577559626/"><img alt="house40" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3339/4577559626_13a62e124a_o.jpg" width="900" height="675" /></a><br />All of the old stuff went bye bye...<br /><a title="house41 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4577559804/"><img alt="house41" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3377/4577559804_5b888ca323_o.jpg" width="900" height="675" /></a><br /></center><center>Here is Dad helping remove anything that was already in the house. So we had this wall between our kitchen and living room. There was an opening, so you could see through, but we wanted to open the whole thing up. Here is how we did it.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4577556294/" title="house9 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="house9" height="675" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4068/4577556294_6384f7d352_o.jpg" width="900" /></a><br />First, this cabinet had to go. We will use parts of that later when we fix some of the lower cabinets.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4576922941/" title="house10 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="house10" height="675" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4050/4576922941_d2d8ee902e_o.jpg" width="900" /></a><br />Nice striped wall. That needs to go...<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4576923059/" title="house11 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="house11" height="675" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3372/4576923059_2278f3c8bc_o.jpg" width="900" /></a><br />These will have to go too. We'll put brand new outlets in later.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4577557164/" title="house12 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="house12" height="1200" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4057/4577557164_e34c769260_o.jpg" width="900" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4577557460/" title="house14 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"></a> Always make sure your cuts are level. Nobody likes a crooked cut, or a crooked bar counter top.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4576924385/" title="house16 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="house16" height="675" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4033/4576924385_902689302c_o.jpg" width="900" /></a><br />Cutting the drywall with a keyhole saw.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4576924443/" title="house17 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="house17" height="675" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4039/4576924443_7919ddb65b_o.jpg" width="900" /></a><br /><br />Goodbye view-blocking drywall.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4577558030/" title="house19 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="house19" height="675" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4067/4577558030_9e23c6d72a_o.jpg" width="900" /></a><br /><br />Now just cut the studs and pull the whole thing out. If this wall was bearing a significant load, I would have <span style="background-color: yellow;">supported</span> the roof before taking out the studs. Since our house is so small and narrow, the rafters are able to support the 1-inch thick roof just fine.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4577558290/" title="house22 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="house22" height="675" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4065/4577558290_8573b0a167_o.jpg" width="900" /></a><br />Insert header and you're ready for drywall. Well there is a bit more to it than that but you know what I mean...<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4577558390/" title="house23 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="house23" height="675" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3417/4577558390_e23d9bd2a6_o.jpg" width="900" /></a><br />Ahhh...Nice and open...<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4576925173/" title="house24 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="house24" height="675" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4034/4576925173_9440eded83_o.jpg" width="900" /></a></center>

One of the largest projects we had to do was to drop down a ceiling in the living room. In this room we wanted to have the ceiling flat with recessed lighting. This meant framing in a new ceiling. This was no simple task...<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4539383795/" title="House091 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House091" height="675" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4053/4539383795_2de35e90f4_o.jpg" width="900" /></a> </center>
<center>
</center>
<center>
After determining a ceiling height of 8 feet 6 inches, we ran a 2x4 all the way around the perimeter of the walls in the living room and hallway.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4539383957/" title="House092 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House092" height="675" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4055/4539383957_ff54a56ec8_o.jpg" width="900" /></a><br />Here is Doug marking the studs to be 16 inches on center. This way the drywall on the ceiling will be less likely to sag over time.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4540017796/" title="House095 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House095" height="675" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2741/4540017796_582a364e64_o.jpg" width="900" /></a> </center>
<center>
</center>
<center>
We used these handy joist hangers to make the job of placing the 11 foot beams easier.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4539384703/" title="House096 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House096" height="675" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2776/4539384703_058a0485f1_o.jpg" width="900" /></a> </center>
<center>
</center>
<center>
They go in easy: Tap inplace with hammer...<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4539384865/" title="House097 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House097" height="675" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4067/4539384865_58eee19565_o.jpg" width="900" /></a> </center>
<center>
</center>
<center>
...and then screw in place.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4539385055/" title="House098 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House098" height="675" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2793/4539385055_53913c7b1a_o.jpg" width="900" /></a> </center>
<center>
</center>
<center>
Always make sure the beams are level. The people doing drywall will thank you. Notice how Doug is skipping the beam that will need to be cut at an angle to fit in with the rafter above. Saving the hard stuff for later.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4540018558/" title="House099 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House099" height="675" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4017/4540018558_6a0616b314_o.jpg" width="900" /></a><br />It's coming along...<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4539385693/" title="House102 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House102" height="675" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2699/4539385693_47360f4e6b_o.jpg" width="900" /></a> </center>
<center>
</center>
<center>
And here it is. Two days of hard work (on a ladder most of the time). Can't wait to see it with the drywall and recessed lights!<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4539386171/" title="House105 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House105" height="675" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4060/4539386171_c133272d19_o.jpg" width="900" /></a></center>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The plan for the wall between the kitchen and the living room is to turn it into a bar/counter. Since the house is pretty small, there really is no room for a regular dining room table, so we decided that putting in a bar area would be the perfect solution. It would also help open the kitchen up and make the room seem bigger. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Yesterday we took down part of the wall! Here's a quick video of the demolition in Fast Forward! Enjoy!</div>

Most of it being things you've never bought before. Take for example this hose:<br /><center><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4536730416/" title="House080 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4036/4536730416_ac4dd6a335_o.jpg" alt="House080" width="900" height="675" /></a><br /><br />I wanted to replace the hose that came with the house. The outer shell of the hose was broken, but not quite at the point of spewing water. It was on it's last leg. So on our last trip to Home Depot, while Doug was in line, I went and grabbed a hose. I've never bought a hose before, so I grabbed the cheapest "nice" looking one.<br />When we got to the house I replaced the old hose with the new one. I was so excited to try out my new hose. But within 30 seconds, this is what it looked like:<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4536731264/" title="House081 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2726/4536731264_759974297a_o.jpg" alt="House081" width="900" height="675" /></a><br /><br />Horrible kinks, everywhere!<br /><br />Stupid new homeowner. If you don't want your hose to kink constantly you have to spend the extra $10 on the "Non-kinking" hose!<br /><br />So Doug returned that one and let me get a new hose. I decided to give this one a try:<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4536732104/" title="House082 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2699/4536732104_d53a12eafd_o.jpg" alt="House082" width="900" height="675" /></a><br /><br />It *shouldn't* kink. It basically stores itself (I'm sooo lazy!). It's a cute color.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4536732982/" title="House083 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4019/4536732982_85749b2ca3_o.jpg" alt="House083" width="675" height="900" /></a><br /><br />And did I mention it comes with it's own fancy 7 pattern sprayer for the same price as a regular non-kinking hose? SOLD!<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4536733816/" title="House084 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2696/4536733816_4b75212d2c_o.jpg" alt="House084" width="675" height="900" /></a></center>I'm hoping it lasts because so far I LOVE it. But I've only had it for 3 days. We'll see.Laurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04484202731202322328noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2739917006976958204.post-48427345425115188792010-04-13T16:11:00.000-07:002013-05-09T22:06:48.263-07:00Sliding Glass Door Instalation<center>
On Sunday we installed our new sliding glass door! </center>
<center>
<br /></center>
<center>
Remember this old, broken, ugly door?<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4519364440/" title="House032-arrow by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House032-arrow" height="675" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4057/4519364440_3c34d0b2fe_o.jpg" width="900" /></a><br /></center>
<center>
Well, it's gone now! After a little convincing we were able to get it out of the wall.</center>
<center>
<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4516518217/" title="House047 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House047" height="675" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4054/4516518217_22297374c9_o.jpg" width="900" /></a><br /></center>
<center>
We started off by building the frame for the door. Since we didn't buy a pre-assembled door, and the instructions were pretty generic, we had to build it to measure how big of an opening to cut. </center>
<center>
<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4517153352/" title="House049 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House049" height="675" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2787/4517153352_50d51edfdc_o.jpg" width="900" /></a><br /></center>
<center>
Then we had to cut the opening in the wall. We started by pulling out some of the insulation and cutting the beams. </center>
<center>
<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4516519651/" title="House053 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House053" height="900" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2762/4516519651_6145a7e64a_o.jpg" width="675" /></a><br /></center>
<center>
And that left us with a very thick wall of stucco...</center>
<center>
<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4517154924/" title="House055 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House055" height="675" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4023/4517154924_d5023e63b5_o.jpg" width="900" /></a><br /></center>
<center>
Doug tried making a hole in the wall with a hammer. </center>
<center>
<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4516520311/" title="House056 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House056" height="675" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4021/4516520311_26b43891c1_o.jpg" width="900" /></a><br /></center>
<center>
That didn't work very well, so we moved onto power tools. </center>
<center>
<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4517155640/" title="House058 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House058" height="900" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2797/4517155640_a2ab50563d_o.jpg" width="675" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4517156056/" title="House060 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House060" height="900" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2781/4517156056_f80e30db7d_o.jpg" width="675" /></a><br /><br /><object height="505" width="853"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/9Wp3jSKSxyw&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/9Wp3jSKSxyw&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="853" height="505"></embed></object></center>
<center>
<br /></center>
<center>
The area next to where we wanted to put the door was where a window once was. Unfortunately the stucco patch was done really thick, which made it very difficult to break without taking down the whole patch. So down came the patch.</center>
<center>
<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4516523009/" title="House067 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House067" height="900" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2742/4516523009_ceb8f7982d_o.jpg" width="675" /></a><br /></center>
<center>
Goodbye pink stucco!</center>
<center>
<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4516523205/" title="House068 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House068" height="675" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4048/4516523205_5c4f820f05_o.jpg" width="900" /></a><br /></center>
<center>
The last step was cutting out the baseboard so we could stick the frame in. </center>
<center>
<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4517158206/" title="House069 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House069" height="900" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2705/4517158206_00843eb007_o.jpg" width="675" /></a><br /></center>
<center>
We got the frame in the hole! It fits!</center>
<center>
<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4517158432/" title="House070 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img alt="House070" height="675" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4037/4517158432_0381068586_o.jpg" width="900" /></a><br /></center>
<center>
And last but not least... stick the doors in place! We have a sliding glass door now! </center>
<center>
Doug was very happy...</center>

Our solution?<br /><br />Nail Removing Party!<br /><br />We invited my parents over Saturday to help us get all the nails out. After an entire day of ripping out walls I'm so exhausted and I'm sure I've made more mistakes in this post then I ever have in a blog post. </span></i></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;"><i><br /></i></span></div>Today was a big day... Demolition Day! We spent the entire day ripping out molding and paneling. It was hard, but so much fun! I've hated the paneling since the first time we walked into the house, so it felt very nice to rip it off the wall :)<div><br /></div><div>Doug headed to the house early in the morning to get a head start. By the time I showed up, around lunchtime, he had almost finished the entire master bedroom!<br /><center><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4506418255/" title="House020 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4066/4506418255_305a815f32_o.jpg" alt="House020" width="900" height="675" /></a><br /><br /></center><center>We finished up the bedroom and headed to the living room. I was really looking forward to this room. </center><center>A lot of people have asked us why we want to remove the paneling, or why don't we just paint the wood. Besides wood not being our taste, there is also a lot of poor patchwork done mainly in the living room. If you look in the picture below you can see that part of the wall is MUCH darker then the rest of the wall. The darker part was a patch on the wall. The groves didn't match up at all, and the stain job on the wood was really bad. Even if we painted it, you would still notice it was there. </center><center>Our solution, drywall!</center><center><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4506419721/" title="House024 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2737/4506419721_3281a6a7aa_o.jpg" alt="House024" width="900" height="675" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laingwedding08/4506420169/" title="House026 by lauralaingphotography22, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2800/4506420169_a6a521c27d_o.jpg" alt="House026" width="900" height="675" /></a><br /><br /></center><center>I pulled off my first piece of paneling all by myself!
